Description

Discover the Catena Nicolás Catena Zapata 2005, a flagship red blend hailing from Bodega Catena Zapata in Argentina. This wine captures the essence of Mendoza's diverse landscapes, drawing from select high-altitude sites to create a profound expression of regional character.

Sourced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon at 72% blended with 28% Malbec, it unites grapes from three distinctive vineyards. La Pirámide sits at 3,117 feet in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, while Domingo Vineyard rises to 3,675 feet in Villa Bastías, Tupungato, Uco Valley. Adrianna Vineyard reaches even higher at 4,757 feet in Gualtallary, also in Tupungato, Uco Valley. These locations feature varied soils: deep alluvial loam mixed with clay at La Pirámide, gravel surfaces at Domingo, and alluvial gravelly layers with limestone at Adrianna.

Hand-harvested grapes receive careful treatment through de-stemming and whole berry fermentation in new French oak barrels over 18 days, then further development for 24 months in French oak. The result pours with a saturated black-purple hue, releasing a multifaceted aroma profile of grilled bread, mineral tones, espresso, saddle leather, cassis, black currant, and black raspberry.

On the palate, it unfolds with opulent texture and ripe, sweet flavors, striking a balance between elegance and power. Fruit integrates seamlessly with tannins and acidity, culminating in a lingering, persistent finish that invites contemplation.

Critics have showered praise on this standout: Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awards 98 points, likening it to a stellar Lafite-Rothschild from Argentina with decades of aging potential. Decanter gives 96 points for its firm structure and future promise, while James Suckling scores it 95 for depth, complexity, and refinement.

To enjoy fully, decant for at least an hour and serve at 16-18°C (61-64°F). It shines alongside grilled meats, roasted lamb, game dishes, or aged cheeses. At 14% ABV in a 750 ml bottle, this Argentine red blend offers collectors and enthusiasts a rare chance to own a piece of winemaking excellence.
